Maria Elisabeth Sudhues was found marrying Gerhard Esphorst in 1794. Unknown where she was from. Only clue was a wtiness to their child's baptism, his name was Anton Sudhues from Wiedenbruck. Could not find her in the church records in Wiedenbruck.

2007
Received documentation that Maria Elisabeth is from a family with hereditary rights under the noble house and church in Herzebrock, a community in Wiedenbruck. She presented from her feudal overlord not only a certicate of releas issued at Herzebrock on Sept 16, 1794 and a permission to marry issued on the same day. There was a dowry that came from the Suthues farm. The brides brother, farm owner Buhrmann paid some money to help her meet the dowry.

2011
Searched the Herzebrock Church records, St. Christina (1657-1902) and found the surname spelled different (Sut(d)thoff. There is a Maria Elisabeth bapt in 1768. There is no evidence of the surname Sud(t)hues in these records. The question is whether this is the same family. Official minutes of chamber court, file 404, page 289, Sept 19, 1794 states Maria Elsiabeth is from the church Herzebrock.

The Sud(t)hues surname is found in St. Vitus Church records but this is a distance south of Herzebrock. The surname appears in Rhea but in Evangelical records.

This area has been confusing because Wiedenbruck is the Kreis for the area of the following:

Clarholz, St. Laurentius 1641
Friedrichsdorf, St. Friedrich, 1680
Gutersloh, St. Pankatus, 1651
Herzebrock, St. Christine, 1657. (Surname Suthoff present with a Maria Elisabeth in 1768)
Langenburg, St. Lamberts/St. Laurentius, 1651
Rhea, St. Clemens, 1645
St. Vit, St. Vitus, 1645
Wiedenbruck, St. Aegidius, 1625. (No Maria Elisabeth Sudthues found)

Will need to check these other churches!!!!

March 2011

Rechecked the Wiedenbruck church records and found Maria Elisabeth Sutthus in the church records of St. Agidius in Wiedenbruck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Romanesque church was demolished in 1474 to the tower and replaced by a new nave. The new Gothic nave extends over four bays in the east and flows in a square choir with 5/8-Abschluss. The three lane tracery windows and the vault of the present nave date from this period.

Century, this church because of population growth to small. My primary interest was from Daniel Woodring and Susanah Sipes, their son Jacob Woodring and wife Susanah Queen?, and their son Charles Woodring and wife Sarah Ann Morgan, and their son David Charles Woodring and their documentations. I have collected other families along the way and have documents for some but it is the researchers responsibility to further research the other lines.

SLCL Research

1. Found Obituary
2. Found Holy Ghost Church Burial
3. Found Holy Ghost Cemetery Record.
4. Found Robert Bohler lot owner at Old St. Marcus Cemetery
5. Found Rudolf Bohler and sister Anna Schneider as lot owners at Old St. Marcus Cemetery.

11/13/14

1. Went to New St. Marcus Cemetery Office on 11/13/14 to check on records from Old St. Marcus Cemetery. They have no record of Elisabeth Bohler being at either New St. Marcus or Old St. Marcus Cemetery. Conclusion is that Elizabeth Bohler was probally buried with the other Bohlers in St. Marcus Cemetery. Either lot 1606 or 1713.
2. Rudolf Bohler and Anna Schneider sold lots back to the Old St. Marcus Cemetery. Would Elisabeth Bohler been removed again???????

1.There is no record of Elisabeth Bohler in the index of Old St. Marcus Cemetery at SLGS office.

2. There is an Elisabeth Fischer, age 62 at Old St. Marcus but lot owner is Louis Fischer. Not her.

3. No Bohlers at New St. Marcus Cemetery

John Lewis Family, http://www.madeofcotton.com/family/major_john_lewis.html. Accessed10/18/2012.

Major John Lewis was born 1678 in County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland. He died 1762 in Augusta Co, VA.

The Lewises leased land in County Donegal from a man named Sir Mungo Campbell. Upon his death, Sir Mungo's estate descended to his son who preferred a Catholic tenant for the property. Disregarding the lease made by his father to John Lewis, an ardent Presbyterian, he attempted to evict the Lewises. John refused to vacate the property, so the young Lord, known for his profligate & wayward manner, took his bailiff and a mob of drunken companions and attempted to force the surrender of John Lewis' lease. John barricaded himself inside his house & refused the landlord admittance, whereupon the Lord fired a shot through the window, killing Charles Lewis, a younger brother of John, who was lying ill in bed. A second shot injured John's wife Margaret in the arm. Outraged, John attached the Lord with his shillelagh, "cracked open his head" and "scattered his brains". He also killed the bailiff and drove the rest of the drunken posse off in panic.

Leaving Margaret to settle up his affairs in Ireland, John escaped to Portugal to the home of his brother-in-law. He arrived in Oporto in 1729. Shortly afterwards, he fled to America, landing in Philadelphia, PA. His family joined him a year later. He removed to Lancaster Co, PA where he spent the winter of 1730-1731, moving to Williamsburg, VA the following summer where he lived with the family of Governor Gooch, a friend of the Lynn family. There he met Peter Salling who had recently explored the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Intrigued with the glowing accounts of the beauties of this country, John Lewis obtained a grant of land from Governor Gooch and crossed the mountains.

John Lewis and Joist Hite, a German immigrant from PA were the first white settlers west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Hite settled the lower part of the valley near present Winchester, then called Mecklenburg. John made his home near the present town of Staunton. He built a substantial stone house on a small stream which he named Lewis' Creek. This community was called Fort Lewis. He prospered and accumulated a large estate, reared a family of four sons, all of whom are noted in their country's service both civil & military. He lived on his estate until his death in 1762. His gravestone reads: "Here lies the remains of JOHN LEWIS, who slew the Irish Lord, settled Augusta County, located the town of Staunton and furnished five sons to fight the battles of The American Revolution. He was the son of Andrew Lewis Esq. and Mary Calhoun and was born in Donegal County, Ireland 1678 and died in Virginia, February 1, 1762. He was a brave man, a true patriot and a firm friend of Liberty throughout the World."

John was pardoned by the King for the killing of the Irish Lord, after a year of exile, but he never returned to Ulster. He is described as more than 6 feet tall, very powerful and active.

He married Margaret Lynn. She was born 3 July 1693 in Ulster, Ireland and died 1773 in Augusta Co, VA. She was the daughter of William Lynn and Margaret Patton. Go to the Lynn line here.

Their children were:

Samuel Lewis (born about 1716, County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland)

Thomas Lewis (born 27 April 1718 in County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland); married Jane Strother

General Andrew Lewis (born 9 October 1720 in County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland)

Alice Lewis (born 1772 in County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland); married an unknown Madison

William Lynn Lewis (born 17 November 1724 in County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland); married Anne Montgomery

Margaret Lynn Lewis (born 1726 in County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland); married William Long, William Crow

Anne Lewis (born 1728 in County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland); married Michael Finley, Jr.

Charles Lewis (born 11 March 1736); married Sarah Murray

p. 4: John LEWIS, father of Gen. Andrew, probably of Welsh
descent, was born 1678 in County Donegal, Ireland. He married

he killed a man of high station in a tenancy dispute. [Others ex
plain the recently deceased landlord's son sharply raised prices
for all tenants.] John fled to Portugal, from whence he fled to
America 1731. He settled two miles east of Staunton. He was
Col. of Augusta Co. militia as early as 1743, presiding Justice
1745 and high sheriff 1748. He died 1 FEB 1762, age 84.
He had sons "Samuel", Andrew and Charles d. 1774 at Point

said Wither's erred -- John Lewis HAD NO SON named "Samuel"; he
should have said "Thomas". (page 50)

Personal Research Notes submitted by Karen Lynn Irlander Radel Osborne_______________________________________

???????????????How did I find the Ancestral Home of my Immigrant Ancestor Rudolph Bohler and Anna Schmid, my 2nd Great Grandparents?????????????

1. I started researching my family when a friend of mine (Kathy Hilderbrand) and I became interested in Genealogy, about 1985. We would go to local libraries learning what geneaolgy was and how to do research our families.

2. Next, my husband at the time became interested and we would research together, finding basic information about our ancestors through census records mostly. It was so much fun putting our lines together through the census records. I felt like a detective.

3. So I found out through the census records that Rudolph Bohler was my immigrant ancestor and he was from Switzerland. Now what's next? I actually did not know what to do so I started working on other lines.

4. Around 1990 my dad received a letter about a Bohler Family Reunion coming up. My dad told me about it, and with excitement I corresponded that we were coming.

5. At the reunion I met two cousins, (Beverly Drucker and Jan Wenk) and we started doing research together, everyone sharing what information they had. No one knew the ancestral town of Rudolph Bohler.

6. Then on day Beverly found an old Document at her Dad's house. It was a document that Rudolph brought to this country. It was in German so we had no idea what is was except it had Seengen, Canton Aargau, Switzerland on it.

7. Beverly also had some notes from an unknown author that talks about corresponding with Louisa and Helen, they were daughters of Rudolph and in these notes a statement was made. " Dad's mother (Elisabeth Bohler nee Fischer), sister ( Anna Bohler), and our dad (Rudolph), were neighbors of and renters in Mother's (Anna Bohler nee Schmid) parents' house in Oberuster, Switzerland". Oberuster is 30 miles from Zurich. The name you mention, Kanton Aragau, I never heard of. "This is where they lived while the father still lived. He died of small pox about 1870-Granny (Anna Schneider nee Bohler) was a baby or small girl. He had been a tailor; soldiers retreating-Franco Prussian War-brought small pox in 1870. They probally moved then to where the older boys could get work".

8. Ursula Schiefel, my cousin in Germany translated Rudolph's document and it stated he was a citizen of Seengen, Aargua Switzerland. Being that is where he was born and his ancestors were from!!!!!! This verified that Rudolph's ancestral town was Seengen.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9. Wrote letter to Gemeinde Seengen, 5707 Switzerland and recieved a family registry for Rudolph and his parents and grandparents.

10. Wrote a letter on 10 Oct 1999 to Zivilstandsamt Uster, CH 8001 Zurich, Switzerland with reply on 2 Nov 1999 verifing Anna Schmid's parents with other information also.

Summary of FHL research rest of 1/31/12. I started working on F/U from trip to Switzerland. I found Georg Bohler's baptismal record 20 April 1760 in the Evangelisch Kirchenbuch of Mulhausen, Haut-Rhin, France. FHL microfilm # 0715490. Also found a sibling baptized 8 April 1764. No othe siblings found 1755-1770. I scanned these images and printed them out also. Next, I reviewed three books. One book gave me information on the church records for Rudlingen, Canton Schaffhausen. The next book on Albrecht family history did not give me any information. The third book was a gem. It is about the town of Reinach, Canton Aargau Switzerland. Found family crest for the different surnames from Reinach; Hedigar, Haller, Eichenberger, Gautschi, and Merz. Copied many pages from this book. Will need to do further research on this and try to find a hard copy of it. No other finds for the day.

Hello Art Holmes,
What a great research site!!! Thank you.
I am researching the Rodel line in Kandel, Der Pfalz Germany.
What resources did you find them back to 1570 in? Was it church
records only or other records in that town? I have wrote over to Kandel
without much success. Thanks in advance for any tips.

It was church records, but I did not do the research. It was done by the prev curator.
He actually made a trip over there.

46 !!!! Research Notes for finding my immigrant ancestor Gerhard Heinrich Dur(r)mey(i)er!!!!

A.
This census record connected my Catherine Durmeyer to her father. I had thought her father was B.H. Durmeier for awhile, the line Louise was off of.
1850 United States Federal Census about Catharine Dermeir
Name: Catharine Dermeir
Age: 38
Birth Year: abt 1812
Home in 1850: St Louis Ward 6, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri
Gender: Female
Family Number: 77
Household Members:
Name Age
Gerhart Dermeir 48
Catharine Dermeir 38
Elizabeth Dermeir 14
Mina Dermeir 11
George Dermeir 8
Louisa Dermeir 7
John Dermeir 3

B.
I have met some Durmeier descendants over the years. I contacted a Louise Durmeier early in my research and she gave me the name of a contact in Holland. He connected my Durmeier line to Westerbeck, Metten, Westerkappeln Germany for me. I obtained information about G.H. Durmeier from Germany but could not solve my problem in St. Louis. How ironic is this?

C.
Adrian Durjmeir Correspondences over the years and visit with him in 1997.

D.
Can not find the G.H. Durmeier family in the 1840 St. Charles Co., Missouri, although there is evidence of them being in Femme Osage, St. Charles County area in 1839. Some of G.H. Durmeiers's children were baptized in UCC Church in Femme Osage starting in 1839.

E. 9/8/08 St. Peters UCC Church Records in St. Louis

I (Karen Radel) have been trying to find Gerhard Heinrich Durrmeier after 1851 for 20 plus years. I could not find any information on him or his wife after 1851. I was always hitting a brick wall. A few weeks ago I found a few leads on G.H. Durrmeiers children searching ancestry.com.

I found three of his children in the St. Louis death records in 1852. I found another child in the 1853 death records of St. Louis. All of them were buried at German Protestant Cemetery. I looked for this cemetery and found an affiliation with St. Peters UCC Church in St. Louis.

The church records for St. Peters UCC were available at the St. Louis Co. Library. I searched for the 1852 death records of the children and found them. I then searched the death records for G.H. Durrmeier and found him in 1852. He died two months prior to the children, all of Cholera. This made me feel very sad. It appears that the family moved from St. Charles County to St. Louis some time in 1848, as I found documentation of G.H. Durrmeier selling his land in 1848. He had purchased land from the government in 1843 for cash. He probably moved his family for a better life and most of the family perishes in 1852 of cholera. There was an epidemic in St. Louis in 1849. This epidemic was an infectious gastroenteritis caused by a bacteria with transmission occurring through ingestion of contaminated water or food.

F. Some generic information that I found:

Germans that came to St. Louis. St. Louis was the destination for many German immigrants. Many ships departed from Bremen and arrived in New Orleans. The passengers then traveled up the Mississippi River to St. Louis.

G. Church

St. Peter’s

Location: 2101 Lucas and Hunt Rd Established: 1857

St. Peter’s Church was established in 1848 when the North Church of the German Evangelical Congregation of St. Louis became independent from the South Church (St. Marcus). The congregation consolidated with St. Peter’s Chapel, Ferguson, in 1972. St. Peter’s Church has had two cemeteries in its history:

1. German Evangelical Cemetery See German Evangelical Cemetery

German Evangelical See also St. Marcus Cemeteries, St. Peter’s Cemetery

Also known as: Westerman’s, Lemp Avenue Location: Lemp Ave. near Utah, later bordered by Wisconsin and Cherokee, St. Louis City Year established: 1846

The German Evangelical Cemetery was founded by the German Evangelical Congregation in St. Louis, founded in 1843 by the Rev. George W. Wall and a group that left Holy Ghost Church. The congregation had two locations, the North Church at 14th and Carr, and the South Church at Soulard and Jackson (later 3rd St.). The two congregations became independent of each other 1848, with the North Church becoming St. Peter’s and the South Church becoming St. Marcus.

The German Evangelical Cemetery continued to be operated by both St. Marcus and St. Peter’s congregations after they divided. The cemetery was condemned shortly after the last burial in 1856. Both churches advertised that bodies could be removed and buried in the new cemeteries. Bodies found when the land was re-graded in 1899 were removed to Old St. Marcus Cemetery. The churches sold the land in 1909.

Cemetery records Records up to 1848 are possibly located with St. Peter’s Church records. From 1848 - 1856, burials could be listed with either St. Marcus or St. Peter’s church records. The Archives at Eden Theological Seminary and the St. Louis County Library Headquarters Branch has microfilm records of both churches.

Update 3 Feb 2019
According to research by Brigette from Germany the Durmeier line is only accuate up to Arend Durmeier, born in 1683. He was born Kloot.

Jahrhunderts vermuten.
MASTHOLTER NAMENSLISTEN
Stammlinien in Mastholte ermöglicht.
In
unserem Falle taucht der Name „junior Dunne`` (unzweifelhaft gemeint „Dune``) also
großen - neben Hanenbrink, Hakenkamp, Haselhorst, Stukemeier, Morfeldt, Vechteler,
Jugendlichen namens Otto Duhmen + .09 1699.
Im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert war das Hofgelände auch Teil des kirchlichen Jakobi-Marktes;
Was hieß das nun in Geld?
Duhme`` (genannt Duhme). Sein Sohn Caspar
Große-Wietfeld, gt.

Gottfried Walter

Peasantry of Mastholte

The idea of the home club Mastholte on the forecourt of the house Reilmann set up a sundial comes down well with the clubs and has been improved to some suggestions. This could, for example, signposts indicate Mastholte peasantry. In this context, a conversation with home club member Anton Herbort was led by the Halaustrasse to find out the name of the peasantry of Mastholte and their backgrounds. Then there is on the east side of the old community Mastholte the fire. The people there were named after generation "Brandleue," it told him about his grandfather, who in turn had it from his grandparents and were thus in his family oral tradition until the present time, Napoleon. The fire had the "Venn Vennkers with the" connected, previously a barren heath with dwarf pines, which had pulled up well into Delbrücker country. Is the designation on the Vennstrasse Venne and still is today. The people there were partial to the mid-19th Century in so-called huts Plagge usual. An earth house with grass sods piled up and an open fireplace in the middle. The last house Plagge had "Oulen bands" heard. His dugout was called by the people at that time the "Oulerrigge". "Oulenbänd" also belonged to the so-called Dutch-goers. Men, the end of May buckled her scythe and immigrated to Holland for several days in order to cut grass for weeks as a day laborer. If "Olenbänd" was then, after many weeks arrived at his home "Oulerigge" that he had been called to his wife from afar: "Ameresen, Thurs weier meaningful ick, with` NEN grout Beul full of money! "

The next was the peasantry "Brouk with Bröukers", which dragged on for long part of the old riverbed and domesticated until after went into Lippstadt. The name still reminds Lipper break. Further west the long line of Lippstadt - in today's causeway - the "Kranzdourp with the" Kranzdöurpern was. " It joined, back in the north, the "Wietedourp and" Wietendöurper ". The term grew out of range, you can have here because of the bare landscape look very far.

For details about the farming communities of the former village was the home club member Moese Ingrid Wedeking - which is well acquainted with the local history of Moese - be obtained. Then there is the east, long border with the Rietberg, the peasantry Wulfhorst, which got its name from the same farm, which no longer exists. Its former owners have lost their possessions and emigrated to America. He belonged to the so-called Horst farms that together formed a large circle and whose buildings are in part today. It follows in the district court of East Moese Schlepphorst and near the road to the farm Rietberg Haselhorst - today Niggemeier -. He was among other things, the main street and a school Mastholte his name. Furthermore, in the former village Moese, Esphorst the property at the Lange Straße dam and nest in Katthagen. Bokeler in communal districts to close the circle, hedgehogs Horst, Horst and Under Ahnhorst. Immediately in the wake of the town center to the west of Mastholte Katthagen to explain with defensive wall. It follows the peasantry Wimmelheide, which in turn stands for heathland. Here too, courts, who still called "Wimmel" anchored in the name, such as Wimmelmeier or Wimmelbücker. The north of Moese stands for a bog area. The "Hammoor" - is relatively fertile ground here today - was the 19th hereditary tenants of to the 20th Century made it arable. These were partly similar to bog depressions exist, which had to be fed in and straightened, what has been accomplished by the hereditary tenants with laborious manual work. 50 years ago the great Hamkuhle still recalled the time the wells.

The "grass-angle" was already out of fertile soil and was the seat of the von Balke, a mansion inhabited and had the say in the environment. Between the center and the "Hammoor" of the "blanks". An area on the islands used to be possible only on a settlement amount was. Between the individual hills stood in the rainy season, as the name suggests, all under water.

15, Why Caspar came to St. Louis??????????Here is a connection!!!!!

Descendants of Johann Heinrich (aka Juergens) MEY

Generation No. 4

4. JOHANN HEINRICH4 ORTBALS (JOHANN STEPHAN3, JOHANN PHILIPP (AKA ORTBALS)2 FAHRENKAEMPER, JOHANN HEINRICH (AKA JUERGENS)1 MEY) was born 21 Mar, 1819 in Benteler, Westfalen, Germany, and died 30 Jun, 1858 in St. Louis, MO. He married ANNA MARGARET HEINRICHSMEIER 1853 in St. Margaretha RCC, Wadersloh, Westphalia, Germany.

Notes for JOHANN HEINRICH ORTBALS:
JOHANN HEINRICH "HENRY" ORTBALS (21 Mar 1819-30 Jun 1858) Born at Benteler, Westfalen, Germany. Married in 1853 at St. Margaretha RCC, Wadersloh, Westfalen, Germany, to ANNA MARGARETHA HEINRICHS (abt 1820-30 Jun 1858). Neither Henry nor Margaret are found in Germans to America, and the date of their emigration is unknown. Certainly, they had emigrated by 1857, for Henry is listed as a laborer, residing at 182 North 11th Street, St. Louis, in the city directory for that year. 1857 St. Louis City Directory, p. 168. Henry died at age 38 on June 30, 1858. Death Register of St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO (Mo. St. Archives, roll MS 0071). Margaret remarried on 17 Jan 1860 to Henry MEIBURGER, widower of Maria SANDBOTHE. Id. Henry Meiburger appeared as a driver in the St. Louis City Directories for 1866 and 1869, Edwards' Annual Director to the City of St. Louis, 1866, p. 590 (Mo. St. Archives, roll C16657) ("Heinrich Meiburg," residence 129 Buel); Edwards' Annual Director to the City of St. Louis, 1869, p. 551 (Mo. St. Archives, roll C16657) ("Heinrich Meiburg," residence 1928 Menard); and as a laborer in 1875. Gould's St. Louis City Directory for 1875, p. 623 (Mo. St. Archives roll R163) ("Henry Meiboerger," residence 1507 Exchange). It is not known at this time what the fate was of her two children by Henry Ortbals. They do not appear with her and Henry Meiburger in the census of 1860 or 1870.

Children of JOHANN ORTBALS and ANNA HEINRICHSMEIER are:
i. EDWARD5 ORTBALS, b. 17 Feb, 1857.
Notes for EDWARD ORTBALS:
EDWARD ORTBALS (17 Feb 1857- ?) Baptized at St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO, in 1857; his godparents were Edward Ortbals and Augusta Kampeter. Baptismal Register of St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO (Mo. St. Archives, roll MS 0071). The 1875 State Census of Osage County shows an Edward Ortbals with the family of Herman and "Elisabeth" Kampeter. (Mo. St. Archives, roll C 5060). The only other living Edward Ortbals at that time, son of Caspar Ortbals, appears in that census in the household of his parents. Thus, it is possible that at least one of the children of Henry Ortbals came to live with his half-sister's family in Osage County. Edward has not been found in the federal census. The Miller Co. Permanent Record of Births identifies the parents of "Katy Mary Ortbals" as "Ed Ortbals" and "Mary Bax Ortbals. While it seems most likely that the "Ed Ortbals" in question was John Edward Ortbals, son of Johann Caspar Ortbals, who was resident in Miller Co. and who had a daughter, Catherine Mary, his wife was Gertrude Spellerburg, not Mary Bax. Perhaps Edward Ortbals, son of Johann Heinrich Ortbals, also settled in Miller Co. with his cousins, and married Mary Bax.

ii. MARY CATHERINE ORTBALS, b. 03 Aug, 1858.
Notes for MARY CATHERINE ORTBALS:
MARY CATHERINE ORTBALS (3 Aug 1858- ?) Baptized at St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO, in 1858; her godparents were Catherine Ortbals [i.e., wife of Edward] and Henry Plassmeyer. Baptismal Register of St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO. (Mo. St. Archives, roll MS 0071). Her fate is unknown; probably, she died in infancy.

5. JOHANN EBERHARD4 ORTBALS (JOHANN STEPHAN3, JOHANN PHILIPP (AKA ORTBALS)2 FAHRENKAEMPER, JOHANN HEINRICH (AKA JUERGENS)1 MEY) was born 03 Feb, 1823 in Benteler, Westfalen, Germany, and died 14 Feb, 1869 in St. Louis, MO. He married CATHERINE NORDHOLTZ 18 Jul, 1854 in St. Louis, MO, daughter of JOHANN NORDHOLTZ and CATHERINE PIEKES.

Notes for JOHANN EBERHARD ORTBALS:
JOHANN EBERHARD "EDWARD" ORTBALS (3 Feb 1823-Feb 1869) Born at Benteler, Westfalen, Germany. Christened on 5 Feb 1823 at St. Margaretha RCC, Wadersloh, Westfalen, Germany. Eberhard emigrated from Westfalen, Prussia, to America, on the ship Ernestine, from Bremen to New Orleans, landing in the latter city on 8 Nov 1851. Germans to America, 2:118. His occupation is given as "farmer." Id. Eberhard was married on 18 or 22 July 1854 in St. Louis, MO, to CATHERINE NORDHOLZ (1834-14 Feb 1931), daughter of Joseph NORDHOLZ and Catherine PIEKES; the witnesses were Henry Handing and Margaret Hilke. St. Louis City Marriage Records, Book 6, p. 418; Marriage Register of St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO, vol. 2, p. 5 (Mo. St. Archives, roll MS 0071). Catherine appears in the U.S. Census for 1860 and 1870. In the latter year, she is accompanied by Mary Ortbals, presumably her daughter, Mary Margaret. The family name is shown variously as "Ortbils" and "Ortblats." StLGS Index to 1860 Federal Census, St. Louis City & County; B.W. Steuart, St. Louis, Mo., 1870 Census Index. Eberhard appears in the 1860 federal census, his occupation given as "porter"; he also appears in the St. Louis City Directory for 1860 as a porter for McMechin & Ballantine, residing at 152 North 12th Street. Kennedy's St. Louis City Directory, 1860, p. 395 (Mo. St. Archives, roll C 16659). Eberhard also appears in the St. Louis City Directory for 1866 as a carpenter, residing at 211 North 11th Street. Edwards' Annual Director to the City of St. Louis, 1866, p. 647 (Mo. St. Archives, roll C16657). Eberhard died in February 1869, of alcoholism and pneumonia; he was buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery. St. Louis City Death Register, Jan. 1869-Sep. 1870 (Mo. State Archives, roll C10389); Death Register of St. Joseph's RCC, St. Louis, MO (Mo. State Archives, roll MS 0071). Catherine appears in the St. Louis City Directory for 1874 as Edward's widow, doing washing at 1128 North 12th Street (rear). Gould's St. Louis City Directory for 1874, p. 683 (Mo. St. Archives roll R163). The 1870 federal census shows her as a "washerwoman." By 1875, Catherine is residing at 1414 North 11th Street. Gould's St. Louis City Directory for 1875, p. 700 (Mo. St. Archives roll R163). Her daughter Mary is listed as a saleslady at F.J. Biermann's. Id. In 1892, Catherine resided with her sons, Henry and Frederick, at 1418 North 11th Street; daughter Mary had entered the convent by this time. Gould's St. Louis City Directory for 1892, p. 1167 (Mo. St. Archives roll R164). After 1914, Catherine's granddaughter, Katherine "Catty" HEITKAMP, resided in her household. Catherine is buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. (Sec. 21, Lot 1126; unmarked). Information provided by Catholic Cemeteries of St. Louis, 9 Sep 1996.

Children of JOHANN ORTBALS and CATHERINE NORDHOLTZ are:

Notes for MARY CATHERINE ORTBALS:
MARIA CATHERINA ORTBALS (6 Feb 1856-8 Jan 1859) Baptized at St. Joseph RCC in St. Louis; the godparents were Henry Handing and Mary Catherine Pickert. Biermann's, residing at 1414 North 11th Street with her mother. Gould's St. Louis City Directory for 1875, p. 700 (Mo. St. Archives, roll R163). In 1881, Mary became a nun, joining the School Sisters of Notre Dame and taking the name Mary Honoria. Goodspeed's History of Cole, Moniteau, Morgan, Benton, Miller, Maries, and Osage Counties, Missouri, (Chicago, 1889), p. 804. Caspar and Elisabeth settled in Washington Twp., near present-day Koeltztown in Osage County, MO. Caspar and Elisabeth are buried in St. Boniface Cemetery, Koeltztown, MO. Headstones of Caspar & Elisabeth Descher Ortbals, St. Boniface Cemetery, Koeltztown, MO.

16, Conclusion of why Caspar Esphorst came to St. Louis. He followed other neighbors/friends from the small towns near Moese, so he was not really by himself. Heinrich Ortbals came to St. Louis in 1851. Caspar Ortbals came on the same ship and date as Caspar Esphorst in 1853. There are also Ortbals in Mastholte Church Records. He might of stayed with Heinrich Ortbals at 182 North 11th street when he arrived in St. Louis in 1853 until finding his home on 11th and Mallincrodt where he was found in 1856.

17. 11/24/14
Found Caspar Esphorst in the 1856 Missouri State Census for St. Louis, Missouri...................What a find.
This just about accounts for his life in Germany and America.

18. Other passengers on the ship Ernestine in Dec 1851 were: Fred Wilm Moritz, Caspar and Elisabeth Ortbals, Caspar Schlepphorst, Joseph Stinemeyer, Fried Schweppe, Noppe, Bickert.
